One of the best ways of making a first impression is by showing off a beaming, beautiful smile. For a variety of reasons, our teeth can become stained and discolored, even with daily brushing and cleaning. River Valley Smile Center offers effective Zoom!® teeth whitening treatment that can lighten your teeth by up to eight shades or more, giving you a movie-star smile in a quick procedure with immediate results! Teeth affected by staining agents such as wine, coffee, tobacco, and soda can be significantly whitened with Zoom!® teeth whitening treatments. This fast, convenient procedure can also make your teeth resistant to future discoloration with results that are known to be long-lasting. The procedure involves coating the teeth with the Zoom!® teeth whitening gel, then applying a special low-heat light to the gel. The light breaks down hydrogen peroxide, allowing oxygen to bleach the dentin and the teeth enamel. The procedure typically lasts about one hour, and once it’s complete, you should see the results immediately.
Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length. Dental veneers can be made from porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement. You will need to discuss the best choice of veneer material for you with Dr. Liggett.

Clear braces are an effective way of straightening your teeth as discreetly as possible. Instead of cumbersome metal braces, clear braces involve a system of clear, removable teeth aligners that are virtually invisible. You can even take them out while eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. Each set of aligners is custom-designed for your teeth.   After two weeks, you remove the set of aligners and replace it with the next one, each set made for the gradual straightening of the teeth. Clear braces are not only a more comfortable (and more aesthetically pleasing) alternative to traditional braces, in many cases, beautiful results are achieved in less time.  Set up an appointment today to see if you are a candidate for clear braces!
The dentist treating the patient with missing teeth plays a huge role in natural appearance, function, and facial expression.  The appearance of the entire lower half of the face depends on the teeth, where they are placed and their supporting structures. It is usually not too hard to determine that a person is wearing an improperly constructed or ill fitting denture. The reduced distance between the nose and chin, makes the face take on the appearance of premature aging.  This can be restored with a correctly designed cosmetic denture. Correct positioning of the denture teeth will also improve speech that has been degraded due to a patients old denture. At River Valley Smile Center we strive to provide the best fitting most natural appearing dentures available. If you have never had a denture before, it will take some getting used to, but we will be right there with you every step of the way to answer your questions and ease your mind. If a denture is in your future, you have come to the right place! We take precise measurements of your mouth and face to ensure that your River Valley Smile Center Cosmetic Denture gives you that Hollywood Smile.
The E4D System provides us, at River Valley Smile Center, with the capability of delivering same day dentistry to you using the latest in technology and clinically proven materials.   In contrast to conventional dentistry, which often takes two full appointments to restore a single tooth, the E4D System enables the doctors to digitally scan the prepared tooth in your mouth, design the crown virtually, then send the information wirelessly to an in-office milling station, then mill your metal free crown with precision in just minutes.  Dr Liggett can adjust and characterize your crown to match your other teeth perfectly, then polish to a brilliant luster. Your crown is ready to be seated in your mouth on the same day within a single appointment. This eliminates the need to wear a temporary for weeks at a time and come back for another appointment to have the crown seated.  This system is a major breakthrough in dentistry and we have been using this system to achieve excellence in dentistry, since the beginning, several years ago.
Root canals are a painless procedure that will preserve your tooth and keep the structure from becoming damaged due to infection and bacteria. It is really not that much different, from the patient’s perspective, than other dental procedures.   Root canal treatment involves thorough cleaning and removal of infectious bacteria that have the potential to cause an inflammatory response in the body if left unattended. Once the tooth has been cleaned, the inner tooth will be filled and sealed to prevent the breakdown of the tooth structure. At River Valley Smile Center, Dr. Liggett and his elite team, have excelled in performing the root canal procedure painlessly and with the utmost success. Only the safest techniques and dental tools are used. Your dental health is River Valley Smile Center’s first priority.
PIf you are in a situation in which it is necessary to have a tooth removed, you want to have it done by someone with a great deal of experience removing teeth, right?  At River Valley Smile Center you will find that our doctors have just that, and more.  Dr Liggett has been going on mission trips, removing thousands of teeth, lacking X-rays, in less than adequate conditions, for nearly a decade.   What Dr. Liggett feels is his most important attribute is his ability, through years of study and practice, to remove teeth as atraumatically as possible.  This means that he uses special techniques and instruments that allow them to remove your tooth, while doing minimal damage to the surrounding tissues and bone. This is very important, especially if you intend to replace the tooth with an implant or denture.
Gum disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth.  Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, bacteria, and saliva.  If plaque is not removed, it turns into calculus (tartar).  When plaque and calculus are not removed, they begin to destroy the gums and bone.  Periodontal disease is characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. Four out of five people have periodontal disease and don’t know it!  Most people are not aware of it because the disease is usually painless in the early stages. Not only is it the number one reason for tooth loss, research suggests that there may be a link between periodontal disease and other diseases such as, stroke, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and increased risk during pregnancy.  Researchers are determining if inflammation and bacteria associated with periodontal disease affects these systemic diseases and conditions.  Smoking also increases the risk of periodontal disease. Good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits can help reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease.
At River Valley Smile Center, we strongly believe in patient education, particularly when it concerns your children. We will educate you and your child about the causes of tooth decay, the importance of professional examinations and cleanings, proper dental hygiene and diet, fluorides, and the use of dental sealants. We have flat screen televisions in each room, that you children can control to watch their favorite cartoons.  They are even on the ceiling, so they can watch while we work! In addition, we watch for potential orthodontic problems and discuss with you any need for early treatment. Parents are free to accompany their children to the room while treatment is being performed, but at River Valley Smile Center the child gets to decide what to watch on tv!
Dental implants act as artificial tooth roots. They are made of sterile titanium cylinders, and recommended by dentists for a variety of functions. Depending on your needs and condition, dental implants can replace one or more teeth without affecting neighboring teeth, as well as provide support for a bridge, eliminating the need for a removable partial denture.  Dental implants can also be placed to help add stability to full dentures.   Dental implants will not only help you teeth function better, such as chewing, but overall improve your facial appearance. In turn, your smile will look fantastic! The best candidates for dental implants are those in good oral health, with healthy gum tissue, free from gum disease, and sufficient underlying bone. Dr. Liggett has been placing implants for years, and his results are astounding.  Set up an appointment today to see if you are a candidate for dental implants!

Your Comfort Is Our Priority We offer sedation dentistry to make your experience with us as pleasant as possible. Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. River Valley Smile Center offers oral and IV anesthesia to our patients. These medications are widely used and are proven to be safe and effective to maximize comfort.   What is IV Sedation? IV Sedation enables a higher level of sedation than can be reached with oral or nitrous oxide sedation. It is often known as 'twilight' or 'sleep' anesthesia. Though patients remain conscious during IV sedation and able to understand and respond,  they are in a deep state of relaxation. Time will appear to pass very quickly and most patients have partial of full amnesia (memory loss) of the procedure. Both effective and highly reliable, IV sedation dentistry is extremely safe when the process is supervised by a specially-trained anesthesia dentist. Here at River Valley Smile Center, Dr. Cole J. Johnson DDS received special training in anesthesia during his residency in Birmingham, AL. Additionally, Jo Johnson RN aids in monitoring sedation and has worked in the hospital setting (ER and Labor Delivery) for 10 + years. IV sedation is a very popular option when undergoing dental treatments ranging from a routine cleaning to more extensive dental work.   Who is a Candidate for IV Sedation? IV sedation dentistry works well for many patients who have: - an anxiety or phobia related to dental procedure - an easily triggered gag reflex - very sensitive teeth - a fear of needles - had a traumatic dental experience in the past   It is also the method of choice for patients that: - are having complex dental work or oral surgery - those who prefer to complete long treatments in just one visit.   Before undergoing any sedation dentistry procedure, patients should always notify  us about any pre-existing medical conditions, current medications, or allergies, including previous allergic reactions to medication.
